Image to Word Converter for iPhone/Android : Must-Have App for Journalists

Is there an easier way for a journalist to edit his texts and images than all at once? Imagine having an app that can make an image easily editable and allow you to write on it, but without it looking like it was made by a 4th grader. Well, you don’t have to imagine anymore because that app is here, and its name is Image to Word, a state of the art mobile app OCR converter. But firstly, what does OCR do, what does it mean?

OCR stands for Optical Character recognition, or as defined by Google: the mechanical or electronic conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine encoded text, whether from a scanned document, a photo of a document, etc. What this means in reality is that with a strong enough OCR engine you can take a snap at almost any white paper, document, receipt, bank statement or such, and convert it to a text file.

As you may guess from its name, Image to Word converts photos and screenshots to MS Word files, or more specifically to .docx which is the primary file editing aside from .pub when it comes down to journalism and writing.

This app is coming from a long line of conversion softwares and other mobile applications developed by Cometdocs. Their developers have recently started the next round of updating and upgrading all their apps and soon enough, it was the time to update Image to Word as well. With this third release of Image to Word come some major changes to the User Interface, OCR engine and conversion output.

Here are some of the standout features offered –

  • Outstanding conversion quality
  • Top of the line OCR engine which reads both photos and screenshots
  • Easy access to files as well as sharing them after conversion
  • Optimized output format (.docx) which makes files easily editable afterwards
  • The new UI is very user friendly
  • The app is very battery friendly, which means it can run while not turned on

The app itself is very easy to use since the User Interface has been updated. From the main screen you can choose between converting an image you’ve previously made from the Photos folder, or you can select to take a snap on the spot by clicking on Camera. The app also offers a guide on how to properly take a photo when getting ready for conversion. The main focus point is to have the paper well lit and on a flat surface. Hold your phone or tablet over the paper and make sure you don’t go over the edges and snap the underlying surface as well. After that feel free to leave it over to Cometdocs’ powerful engine to convert it to a Word file for you. As this app is only a conversion tool, it doesn’t offer the services of editing the newly made file within the app, however by pressing the share button you can select in which app you want to edit it.

Journalists usually prefer MS Word, however feel free to use any of the Office packs that support .docx files, such as Libreoffice and Quick Office.

This app is available on iOS for both iPhone and iPad via App Store, however you can find Image to Word on Google Play Store as well, if you are an Android fan. Either way feel free to give the app a go, play around with it for a bit and make sure you leave a comment or review for future visitors to hear your opinion regarding this OCR app.
