Jan Koum on Facebook early today morning shared official news that WhatsApp now has more than 900 million active users. WhatsApp is still holding as the popular instant messaging platform, way ahead of Line, WeChat or any other social networking app.

Jan Koum however doesn’t have any other details like how many messages shared, percentage of adoption by countries, just we have the head count of active users.

800 million mark was crossed in April, back from 700 million in January. To reach 900 million it took four months and with the same pace, by year end we could have WhatsApp passing the 1 billion mark.

Today is January 7, 2015 and no doubt that it’s a good day for WhatsApp as Facebook owned cross platform messaging app has reached 700 million subscribers. 700 million is way far behind other competitors like WeChat, Facebook Messenger, Line, Hike Messenger & other dozens such.

WhatsApp Subscriber numbers now surpasses 700 millions active users worldwide on January 7, 2015.

WhatsApp Messenger which was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 for a price of $22 billion, has stated that they have surpassed 700 million monthly active users worldwide. Thanks to affordable carrier data plans and budgets phones availability that social messaging usage has roar such a high.

Some interesting facts –

  • More than 700 million photos are shared daily
  • 100 million videos are shared daily
  • 64 Billion message are shared daily

Of these 700 million users, India is only the single country where 52 million active users live and enjoy WhatsApp service. No other country in the world has such a big number although that’s just half of Facebook’s active users in the sub-continent. With Facebook acquiring WhatsApp, there will be mutual benefits for both the companies and further brave decision to come up with Voice calling feature in Q2, 2014, means one thing – subscribers count will rise.

It too just 5 years for WhatsApp to achieve such a big milestone since its inception. WhatsApp active users are growing thick and fast in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Russia and India but it’s still unpopular in countries like USA and China. Soon the number will touch down 800 millions.
